Anti-papirbleie propaganda!
In one infant’s lifetime, approximately 8,000-10,000 disposable diapers will be used where each one of those diapers takes approximately 500 years to degrade in a landfill. 7 These diapers are filled with untreated body excrement. Over five million tons of it, that could be carrying intestinal viruses, is brought to landfills. Groundwater contamination could be attributed to this form of disposal since insects are attracted to the sewage where they may be carrying diseases that can be transmitted. In 1990 alone, over 18 billion disposable diapers were thrown into the US’s landfills which where not readily biodegradable. The diapers themselves need to be exposed to air and sun to allow the paper to decompose. It also must be taken into consideration that thirty percent of a disposable diaper is plastic and is not compostable. Recycle plants can only handle 400 of the 10,000 tons of diapers, which are not completely recyclable, in landfills each day.8 This number would only hold if they didn’t have to process any other compostable garbage.
Slik omhandler de stoffet ungene går rundt med i bleiene sine - dette er fra et labforsøk for studenter:
Safety Notes: Sodium polyacrylate is toxic if swallowed and exposure to the eyes should be avoided. Students should not complete preparation or part I of the activity. It should be completed by a trained professional such as a teacher. Sodium polyacrylate crystals can be harmful to nasal membranes, and should not be inhaled. Everyone who comes in contact with the sodium polyacrylate should keep their hands away from their faces. Hands should be cleaned immediately after exposure with moist paper towels or baby wipes, then with soap and water. Safety goggles should be worn when sodium polyacrylate crystals are being used. All materials containing sodium polyacrylate should be disposed by placing them in a sealed plastic container, such as a ziploc bag, and placed in the trash. This includes paper towels used to clean up, and the saturated diaper. Sodium polyacrylate should never be poured down the sink.
Kort sagt: papirbleiene er et alvorlig miljøproblem og stoffet som øker oppsugingsevnen i bleiene er skadelig å håndtere.
